How Locktober Works: Start to Finish
Start dates, continuous versus interrupted wear, keyholder check-ins, and how to end the month well.
Locktober has a simple shape. Lock at the start of October, stay locked through the month, unlock at the end. Nearly all of the variation lives in the details, and those details are yours to set.
The basic structure
Most participants start on October 1 and aim to reach October 31. Some begin the evening before so they wake up already locked on the first. Others start late and simply count from whenever they began. Because nothing is externally enforced, the start date is a matter of preference rather than rule.
Continuous versus interrupted wear
There are two broad approaches. Continuous wear means staying locked for the whole month apart from cleaning. Interrupted wear builds in planned unlocks, often daily or weekly, for washing, exercise, sleep, or inspection. Newer participants generally do better with interrupted wear, because it creates regular opportunities to check skin condition and fit.
Continuous wear suits people with a well-fitted device and prior experience
Interrupted wear suits first-timers and anyone still adjusting to new equipment
Both are legitimate ways to take part
Tracking and check-ins
Solo participants often keep a private log of how the month is going. In a keyholder dynamic, check-ins are the backbone of the arrangement: an agreed rhythm of reporting on comfort, skin condition, and mood. The purpose of a check-in is not only accountability but catching problems early, so honesty matters more than stoicism.
Ending the month
Coming out of a month of wear is worth planning. Expect some sensitivity and take the first days gently. Many participants use the end of October to decide whether they want to continue in a lighter form rather than treating November 1 as a hard stop.
